can you repeat the word?

Check this out!

This is my haul for being a Spelling Bee judge.

I remember being in Spelling Bees when I was a kid, I was a very good speller.  I’m not anymore!

I, and 3 friends from The International Women’s Club were judges for the Interscholastic Spelling Bee.

Six private schools held spelling bees in their individual schools, and this was for the top competitors of 6 schools to compete against each other  in 2nd through 5th grade levels. The schools involved were Ibero, Alianz, Baden Powell, Rogers Hall, Teresiano, and Merida. We spent 3 days from roughly 9 – 2, the times varied a bit by day.

I thought about taking pictures but was concerned I might make some of them nervous.  And oh my gosh some of them were indeed so nervous, it was so saddening to see them fumble because of the nervous fear.  We tried hard to make them comfortable and to appear as open and friendly as possible.

Usually by the 3rd or 4th round the fear dissipated – it is confusing with varying accents, many of their teachers are Mexicans, so that accent is different from their English teachers accent, and from say my American accent, but they overcame and did really well.

It was a fun experience and I hope to do it again next year.

  1. You may be interested to know that the ability to spell well is not connected much with intelligence. You can be quite smart and be a bad speller. Of course, you can be quite smart and be a good speller too.

Cool – spelling NOT my forte ;-0
