at a snails pace

We have been working at organizing for our move back to the USofA.

We’ve been packing those things that we’ve decided to take back, coincidently much of which are things we brought down.  We’ve been selling and giving away lots of other stuff.

We’ve stripped the house down to reveal its potential to prospective buyers.  We are trying to put off till the last moment those things that go with us but that we still use daily.

And we’ve been doing long overdue little maintenance projects.  Tom keeps up on any major maintenance, but the minor stuff we let slide.   Like the outlines around each painting left from cleaning the frames.  Deep cleaning grout lines, fresh caulk where needed etc.  So we removed all the paintings and artworks, patched holes, painted, and now live in a lifeless sterile environment.  The realtors love it, in fact some say clear out more stuff, but my gosh how can a person live like this?  We’ve removed furniture so there is more open space in which potential buyers can envision their own personal touches.

All these things take time, and sometimes it seems it will never get done.  Then a realtor wants to come, and we have to tidy up.  That is a full days event.  Removing whatever personal stuff we have sitting out, cleaning, mopping, geesh, can’t even chuck stuff in the closets because they may want to look in.

One of the little projects, was actually a fun one –

The bathroom mirror has been losing its backing and there have been marks, lines, and discoloration where the silvering has degraded.  We lived with it, no big deal.  But to make the house show better it needed to be replaced.  My goodness when you need to go shop, well for me, it’s like a torture.  I am not a shopper.  Anyway, we finally decided Tom would make a wood frame mirror, and I would decorate it with shells.

Here you can see some of the shell decoration in these fotos.

When we were having the work done on the house, I had the albaniles show me how to mix the pegazulejo and I set the shells myself.  These are all shells that Tom and I have collected from the beaches around the Yucatan.

Moving is difficult, and so unsettling. Once the decision is made wouldn’t it be nice to just pack a bag and go.

This long drawn out process, it just seems to be moving at a snails pace.

About Debi in Merida

I moved from Colorado Springs, Colorado USA to Merida, Yucatan, MX in January 2006. I love to read, garden, travel, and hang out with friends. Then in 2016 I moved to Richmond, Virginia, USA. Culture shock continues.

I totally get how difficult it is to move. I’ve wanted to move the other way (USA –> Mexico) for some time, but I’ve been *very* slow off the dime. And I have yet to fully commit to the idea. At least you’ve committed.

    Buena suerte!

  3. Inspirational, Debi! Wow, very impressive 🙂 You are an artist!

I agree, very special. Take some shells home for the new house in the US. Does anyone know of someone who can sand and seal my bathroom stone walls (I think it’s called macedonia)? Our builder disappeared on us with our money and left us messes to finish up

  5. Lovely job on the mirror. If it had been me I would have covered the thing in shells, making it look like an art project done in a mental facility! You made a tasteful and restrained piece.

    Hi,
I was so happy to hear from you, I already thought something might have happened, or you did change your minds about moving!! I know it is very hard, especially when you put so much work and love in your home. It happened to me quiet a few times. I always knew the time would come…
…….., but more then just once, I cried bitter tears. Some of those places I still keep in my heart, with very fond memories attached. Please let us know how everything is coming along!!

  7. Lovely mirror it looks perfect for your room. Did not see each other much over the years with me living in the boonies and busy creating the business and all the activity in Merida that I could not go to … but I wish you both all the very best in your future decisions
    Take care
    Valerie

Love it! I always have found that by the time I patch, paint and stage my house in preparation to sell it, I almost regret the decision to move. I hope you’ll fall in love all over again with your home and with Merida and decide to stay…

I love the mirror! Much success in your moving process. I cannot begin to imagine the stress. I’ll be moving end of next week, but only about 30 miles, and that’s enough thank you very much! Take care
